Dental Sedation in Katy, TX

Dental anxiety is an issue for many. If you suffer from this common issue, don’t worry! Our sedation options will help you receive important dental care without the stress.

Dental sedation refers to medicine that is designed to reduce physical pain associated with treatment or to reduce anxiety and help you feel more relaxed while dental work is being completed. This makes the experience more pleasant and ensures our staff can perform their duties more effectively.

We offer sedation options including nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and IV sedation.

A dental professional performs a procedure on a patient in a dental chair, wearing a pink dental bib and a nasal mask, surrounded by dental office equipment.
  • What is laughing gas and what does it do?

Nitrous oxide (more commonly known as laughing gas) is widely used as a local sedation method. It is colorless and odorless, and its usefulness stems from its ability to work and safely reverse its effects quickly. It is also widely considered a safe dental sedation method.

  • How does IV sedation work?

With IV sedation, medication is delivered directly into the bloodstream through a small IV line, helping patients feel deeply relaxed and calm during dental procedures. While you’re not fully unconscious, you may feel drowsy and remember little of the treatment. A trained professional monitors your vital signs throughout the process to ensure safety. IV sedation is ideal for those with dental anxiety, strong gag reflexes, or complex procedures requiring extended treatment time.

  • Can I drive home after receiving sedation?

That depends on what type of sedation you receive. For laughing gas, the effects wear off quickly once the gas is removed. You’ll be able to drive home and return to your normal routine.

However, with IV sedation, the effects do linger a little while after your treatment, so you will need someone to drive you home following your procedure.

  • What types of anesthesia are used for dental work?

The most common types of anesthesia used are local anesthesia, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. Local anesthesia is a numbing medication that is injected directly into the area that is to be treated—usually the gums around an affected tooth. In contrast, general anesthesia produces a more profound experience that usually leaves no memory of the actual procedure. It’s typically used for more intensive procedures like tooth extraction, dental implants, or other surgical procedures and the patient is unconscious during the process. IV sedation is a deeper type of anesthesia that achieves a period of brief sedation with very little memory of the surgery.
