How do cavity fillings work?

The dentist removes the decayed part of the tooth, cleans the affected area, and then fills the cavity with a material that restores the tooth’s shape and function. This treatment repairs your tooth and prevents further decay by sealing off any cracks or spaces where bacteria might enter.

Should I have tooth sensitivity after a filling?

It is normal to experience some sensitivity to pressure, air, sweet foods, or cold and hot temperatures after a filling. An over-the-counter pain reliever should help address this. Discomfort should decrease on its own over a few weeks. However, contacting our office is vital if sensitivity persists to ensure no deeper issue is at play.

How long does a dental sealant last?

Dental sealants can last for many years if adequately cared for. They protect the enamel from plaque and acids. Sealants are especially beneficial for children and teenagers whose eating habits might put them at risk for cavities. Regular dental check-ups allow us to monitor the sealants and reapply them if necessary.

Who qualifies for dental sealants?

Sealants are most effective in preventing decay in the molars and premolars. They are ideally suited for children and teenagers because their new permanent teeth are more prone to cavities. However, adults without fillings or decay can also benefit from sealants as a preventive measure to help maintain dental health.
